Shipton Farm

Description from Buckinghamshire's Local Heritage List:

A post-Enclosure farm created by the Selby-Lowndes family after the enclosure of Winslow in 1767. It is on the boundary of the old Winslow and Shipton field systems. It is marked on the 1825 Bryant map as Bridge Farm. The name Shipton Farm appears in a sale advert of 1872 (27th April, Bucks Herald). It became "Old" when a new farmhouse was built in the 1960s. There is a photograph in Terry Foley and Julian Hunt, Winslow (Archive Photographs, 2nd ed. 2019), p.24, who suggest that, as it has a timber frame, parts of the building pre-date Enclosure and were moved to a new site.

Shipton Farm can only have been created after the Winslow Enclosure of 1767, as it is situated on the boundary of the former Winslow and Shipton field systems, and had land in both areas. The farmhouse must have been moved from somewhere else (like several others in the area), as it has the remains of a timber frame but a completely new house at that date would have been built entirely of brick, like Tuckey and Red Hall Farms. The early history of the farm is difficult to reconstruct as it had various names, and the name Shipton Farm seems sometimes to have been used for what is now Rands Farm. The amount of land which the Selby-Lowndes estate allocated to the farm probably varied at different times, so the Land Tax records aren't clear.

1804: death of Thomas Wilson

His joint executor William Wilson of Adderbury, grazier, gave his address as Shipton in 1805. He had a horse stolen from Cow Pasture Close in 1808. Two sons of William and Elizabeth Wilson were baptised at Winslow: Murry in 1805 and Edward in 1807. Some older children were born at Adderbury including William Wilson (1799-1829), a solicitor. William sr left Shipton Farm by 1814 and was back in Adderbury by 1831. He was probably the William Wilson of Adderbury East aged 68 buried on 13 Jan 1834.

Thomas Flowers now occupied the farm previously held by Francis Warner listed under Winslow and assessed at £25 11s 11d. By 1832 it was occupied by John Bull.

The Flowers family was an extensive farming family in North Bucks and it's unclear how this Thomas and John fitted in, or what their relationship was to John Flowers of Beachampton who owned The Bell or to Sarah and Rosetta Flowers who both married Joseph Neal.

E.C. Flowers was living in Whitchurch in 1841. He was baptised at Barton Hartshorn in 1780 and married Susanna Barton there in 1802. He had children baptised in Adstock 1804-19. Died at St Albans 1849 aged 67. Parents Thomas Flowers of Lenborough and Ann Cooper of Barton Hartshorn married at BH 1766.

The first charge established against him was for obtaining 2 osz. of tobacco from M. Edward Fenn, grocer, and other articles, which were to be sent the next day to Shipton Hill Farm, Winslow. The second that of obtaining from Mr. Waters some camphor and areca nuts ... in the name of Mr. William Johnson, of Deanshanger ...

Isaac Mole was bailiff to William Johnson in 1871. The Register of Electors for 1868 has William Johnson as a £50 occupier in Shipton, living at Deanshanger. He continues to be listed unil 1874, but not in 1875 when there seems to be no equivalent entry. Presumably that was when his long tenancy ended. He died in 1877 aged 71.

1872: a sale described as being at Shipton Farm seems to refer instead to Rands Farm.

The Cow Stock is particularly good, many of the Cows are in-calf by a famous pure-bred bull. The couples are very superior. The Grass Grounds are well watered and fenced, and well-known to be the richest grazings in the neigbhourhood. A portion of the land may be mown, and the use of the yards, &c, will be allowed.
Credit will be given for the keeping to the 1st of August next on the usual terms.
[There was a separate sale of furniture on 30 March. In October there were adverts for a sale at Bletchley Station of Mr Gurney's remaining short-horns before he sailed for New Zealand.]

  It is interesting to note that a new industry is being started at Winslow, and bids fair to obtain a good measure of success – in the manufacture of cheese.  Mr. A. Golledge, of Shipton Farm, who has had considerable experience in the cheesemaking districts of England, has during the summer been laying down cheeses, which are now turning out well, and are pronounced by judges to be of excellent quality.  Cheesemaking is an industry which probably might be taken up by the farmers of the district with success.

Another tragedy occurred this week at Winslow when a cowman, named Albert George Walduck, who was employed by Mr. N. McCorquodale, J.P., was found in a dying condition in a stable early on Wednesday morning. Apparently he was in the act of milking a cow when he was seized with heart failure and collapsed ... Deceased was about 40 years of age and resided at Shipton Farm, and leaves a widow and one child. ... He had been employed as a cowman since the summer of 1920 ...
