Notes

The glover's workshop appears to have been at the rear of 22 High Street according to some notes on the Gibbs family; George Barrett mortgaged it in 1741. This would have been conveniently near the tannery in Greyhound Lane. George Barrett lived in Church Street, where his initials and the date 1726 can be seen on the wall of the house now very misleadingly called Abbot's House which he partly rebuilt, but at the 1747 manor court this was described as being in the occupation of Thomas Day, and the court recorded that he was seised of 4 messuages and 1 cottage. The close and "little garden" lying between Church Street and Vicarage Road (Cross Lane) was called Barrett's Close in 1767, when it was held by Thomas Prentice, but Peter Lowndes' Close in later documents; it is now part of the churchyard.

George Barrett married Elizabeth Dubery [Dudley?] at Granborough on 14 March 1737. He was working as a glover in Winslow by 1725, when he took on an apprentice. His brother John was also a glover in Winslow by 1744. George was buried at Winslow on 22 March 1746/7.

Wash leather = soft leather, usually of split sheepskin, dressed to imitate chamois leather (Dictionary of Traded Goods and Commodities, 1550-1820). Used for gloves, breeches, etc.

Alum leather = leather treated with alum or tawed as opposed to tanned (ibid.).

Knittings: probably refers to shaped pieces of knitting for making into gloves or hose (ibid.).

Slink: an abortive or premature calf or other animal (OED).

Friz'd - frizzed: rubbed with a pumice stone or blunt knife (OED, frizz 4).

Sprig: an ornament in the form of a sprig or spray (OED, sprig n.2, 4a).

Stillers: probably stiliards/steelyards, i.e. a balance for weighing.

Beaufett = buffet: a sideboard or cupboard for china, etc. According to the OED this word only came into use in the 18th century.

Hair Line: a line or rope made from hair (OED).
