Will of George Smith of Little Horwood, yeoman, 1719 (proved 1719/20)

In the name of God Amen I George Smith of Little Horwood in the County of Bucks Yeoman being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory praised be Almighty God therefore and calling to mind the certainty of death and the uncertaine time thereof do this Fifth day of June Anno D(om)ini 1719 make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme Following (that is to say) First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker hoping through the merrits death and passion of Jesus Christ my Saviour to be made partaker of everlasting life and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executrix herein after named and as for such temporall Estate as it has pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and dispose thereof as Followeth Imprimis I give will devise and bequeath unto my Grandson George Hodgkins and his heirs for ever All and every my Freehold Lands Tenements and Hereditaments in the parish of Great Horwood and the Appurtenances thereto belonging Item give Will devise and bequeath unto my Grandson John Hodgkins and his heirs for ever all that my Coppyhold Close in the Parish of Great Horwood aforesaid called Appletree Bush Close and the Appurtenances thereto belonging Item give Will devise and bequeath unto my Grandson Thomas Hodgkins and his heirs for ever all the rest of my Coppyhold Lands in the Parish of Great Horwood aforesaid and the Appurtenances thereto belonging Item I give Will devise and bequeath unto my Grandchildren Elizabeth Appletree and Richard Appletree Five pounds a peice of lawfull money of Great Brittain to be paid unto them by my Executrix herein after named as they shall respectively attain the Age of One and twenty years or within twelve months next after my death which shall last happen Item I give Will devise and bequeath unto my Grandchildren William Harrup and Henry Harrup five shillings a piece of lawfull money of Great Brittain to be paid unto them by my Executrix herein after named within twelve months next after my death Item I give Will devise and bequeath all the rest of my Goods Chattells and personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever unto my loveing daughter Joane Hodgkins (paying my debts legacies and Funeral expences) and I doe hereby make and ordain the said Joan Hodgkins my daughter full and sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament And lastly I do hereby revoke and make void all former Wills by me heretofore made and do declare this to be my to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have set my hand and Seale the day and year First above written the mark of George Smith / Signed Sealed published and declared in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of the Testator George Illing [signature] John Woodward [signature] Peter Goldsworth [signature]

[Proved at London 17 Feb 1719/20 by the oath of Joan Hodgekins wife of John Hodgekins, executrix named in the will, sworn by commission.]


Notes

The will was proved at the PCC because of Great Horwood being in a different ecclesiastical jurisdiction from Little Horwood. George Smith was buried at Little Horwood in 1719.
