Will of Thomas Genyn of Shipton, 1506

Herts RO 2AR130

[translation from Latin]  In the name of God amen.  On 9 June in the year of the Lord 1506 I Thomas Genyn of Shypton, being sound of mind & of healthy memory, however being deeply ignorant of the day and hour of my death, and fearing the peril of death night and day to be imminent, make my will in this way.  First I commend my soul into the hands of God the almighty father & into the protection of the blessed & glorious Virgin Mary and of all the blessed companies of saints[?], & my body to be buried in the churchyard of  the parish church of St Laurence of Wynslow.  Item I bequeath to the high altar 2 bushels of barley.  Item I bequeath to the image of St Laurence on the northern side of the chancel one bushel of barley.  Item I bequeath to the Blessed Mary on the southern side of the chancel one bushel of barley.  Item I bequeath to the Blessed Mary in the church [deletion] on the southern side in the same place one bushel of barley.  Item I bequeath to the new pulpit of the upper storey of the great crucifix [novo pulpito solar’ magni Crucifixi] in the church 1 bushel of barley.  Item I bequeath to the altar of St Thomas 1 bushel of barley.  Item I bequeath to the bells 1 bushel of barley.  Item I bequeath to the torch lights 1 bushel of barley.  The residue indeed of all my goods not bequeathed above I give and bequeath to Agnes my wife, and I ordain, make and appoint Agnes herself my sole executrix to carry out this last will of mine as shall seem most expedient for my soul.  And William Tomlyn & T(homas) Glenestr(e) (to be) my true supervisors.  Witnesses: Master George Brown, John Shyrwod clerk & many others.  Given in the place, day & year stated above.

[Probate granted 20 October 1506 to the executrix]
