WINSLOW
Is a small market town and parish in the hundred of Cottesloe 48 miles N.N.W. from London seven S.E. from Buckingham, and 10 N.N.W. from Aylesbury (the nearest railway station); situated in an exceedingly fertile part of the county, and surrounded by land in a high state of improvement. The town, which is of considerable antiquity having been given by King Offa to the Abbey of St. Albans so early as 794, consists of three principal streets. The manufacture of lace employs some few of the female inhabitants; and there is a little malting business done. A court leet is held annually at the Bell Inn, in October, by the lord of the Manor, William Selby Lowndes Esq.
The parish church is a spacious and ancient structure, in the later style of English architecture with a square embattled tower at its western end : the benefice is a vicarage, in the gift of the crown; the Rev. W.W. M'Creight is the present incumbent. There are places of worship for Baptists, and a national school. A well selected library, with a neat reading room attached, has been lately opened in Great Horn-street: the establishment is recognised by the respectable inhabitants as a great accommodation, and as such well supported by them. The market day is Thursday; the fairs are held February 18th, March 20th, April 20th, Holy Thursday, August 21st, September 22nd, November 26th, and December 9th, all for cattle; there are besides statute meetings for hiring servants, on the first Thursday before, and the first and second Thursdays after 11th October. The parish of Winslow contained, by the returns made in 1831, 1,290 inhabitants; and by the last census (1841) 1,379.
