Duty paid on coaches and silver plate, 1757-66

National Archives, T47/3-5

These taxes were among many imaginative methods of fund-raising introduced by Parliament under George II. Records only survive for the first years in which they were collected. You paid £2 a year for a 2-wheeled vehicle (chair, chaise or post-chaise), £4 for a 4-wheeled vehicle (coach), and 5s per 100 ounces of silver plate.
