Edward VII travels through Winslow, 1905

Buckingham Advertiser, 11 Feb

Edward VII wearing his crown   THE KING.- Never before has Winslow been visited by Royalty, and when the fact became known on Tuesday morning that his Majesty was likely to ride through about mid-day, flags and banners made their appearance as if by magic, the Bell Hotel, the Bank, and many other houses coming out with fine streamers.  Soon after one o’clock the people began to assemble in the High Street, and the children were assembled at the schools in Sheep Street.  Time went on, however, and by 2.30 many of the spectators were gone; then, just before 3 o’clock, the motors came flying down Sheep Street.  Warning was given at the schools, and the children had time to assemble and sing “God save the King” as his Majesty went by - a compliment which he graciously acknowledged.  The cars swept through the Market Square and along the High Street, and then again his Majesty acknowledged the cheers of the people by standing up and bowing just as he passed the post-office.  The return through Winslow was made just at 4.45 p.m., but his Majesty being in the first motor car, not many people saw him then.

Edward VII was staying with the Earl of Rosebery at Mentmore, and travelled through Winslow on his way to and from Stowe.
